En su área natal la reproducción del pez león es cada año, mientras que en nuestro continente debido a su voraz apetito y falta de depredadores naturales que puedan controlar sus poblaciones estos peces pueden reproducirse hasta 4 veces en el año liberando miles de huevos los cuales son arrastrados por las corrientes colonizando más territorio cada vez ya que les toca poco tiempo alcanzar la madurez sexual.
