It should not be confused with the scorfanotto (Scorpaena notata), very similar but small in size, and with the black scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus), characterized by color and appendages (ridges and spines typical of this family of fish) most developed. The redfish can reach up to 60 centimeters in length, even if on the market it is more commonly found between 20 and 30 centimeters. The spines of the dorsal fin, large and robust, contain poison glands. It is an "ambush" fish that feeds on smaller preys due to its mimetic capacity. Lo scorfano rosso (Scorpaena scropha), noto anche semplicemente come scorfano, è un pesce di acqua salata della famiglia delle Scorpaenidae. All'interno della sua numerosa famiglia, che comprende oltre 200 specie di pesci, lo scorfano è la specie più grande e pregiata. Non va confuso con lo scorfanotto (Scorpaena notata), molto simile ma dalla dimensioni ridotte, e con lo scorfano nero (Scorpaena porcus), caratterizzato da colore e appendici (creste e spine tipiche di questa famiglia di pesci) maggiormente sviluppate.
