The impressive, shy and majestic Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna lewini. ICUN status Red-ENDANGERED by economical overfishing globaly and sadly Costa Rica doesn't escape of trading and selling them.

With a lifespan of 35 years and a max. size of 4.3 mts it can weight 160 kg. In words of Avi Klapfer sharks generate more income to Costa Rica alive than dead each individual generates $1.6 million over its lifetime in diving tourism than in fishing, politicians around the world MUST understand this concept. SHARKS are WILDLIFE.

In the last 10 years their population has decreased by 55% in the next 10 years their are expected disappear if goverments don't create protected and PATROLLED areas. Fishermen, restaurant owners, supermarket chains, general public and fish companies need to be educated in the fish meat they commerce, buy and eat.

Males are smaller than females, and while females venture in the deep, males like shallow waters. Their diet consist of a menu of deep water squits, stingrays, sardines, barracuda, parrotfish, ray-finned fish and ocassionally black tip shark. Its a deep soitary hunter.

Their brain is large and evolved, followed by the Mobula birostris (oceanic manta) and they have an incredible sense of orientation with electromagnetic reception skills used in hunting, navigating and schooling. In this regard, the schools funtion as a mating act instead of protection; this are congregations of females and it is thought that this is a mating ritual in which the males explode into the center flashing their claspers to females, presumably to entice the female to swim off for later encounter. They are very private in their copulation.

Another fascinanting fact is that females can store sperm in a gland called oviductal which allows to store the sperm of up to three males, so she doesn't become pregnant at moment of copulation. She chooses the most advantegous moment, giving her the ability to find sufficient food and grow to improve survival rates. Her gestation period is from 9 to 10 months, they are viviparous with a yolk-sac placenta, it can carry up to 40 pups which sadly a great number never make it to adulthood. They give birth on coast Lines which are identified (for safety reasons is better to reserve this info)

They love to be cleanned of parasites by wrasses, barberfishes and king angels and this symbiotic relationship its amazing cause the shark enters like in a trance.

In Costa Rica an example to follow is Dr Randall Arauz that has studied and published their migrations and has been an active defender of their conservation and preservation. Undersea Hunter group had published a lot of info in regards to their study and internationally Dr. Pete Klimbley is Dr. Hammerhead in studies and preservation.
